Tohoku University Technology: Open-cell Porous Silicon: T11-057 and others
Can be used as battery anode material in the form of powder, etc.
Currently, carbon materials are used as the negative electrode active material in lithium-ion batteries, but silicon, which has a theoretical capacity more than ten times greater, is attracting attention for achieving higher energy density. However, silicon poses challenges due to self-destruction and delamination from the electrode caused by volume expansion and contraction during charge and discharge, hindering its practical application. The present invention successfully developed an open-cell porous silicon material using a component removal reaction in molten metal. This structure, which has a large specific surface area and contains adequate space to alleviate the strain associated with silicon's expansion and contraction, addresses the aforementioned challenges. A lithium-ion battery using porous silicon as the active material has been shown to have a greater specific capacity than current lithium-ion batteries and also exhibits superior cycle life.
